Harvey,

What a year! Where do I ever begin….

Finding you was the biggest blessing of my presidency and honestly the four years I’ve been on the leadership team. You have been a breath of fresh air and were my saving grace. I would not have made it through this past year without your guidance, expertise and support. I have learned so much from you, not only professionally but also in understanding the importance of building relationships, embracing challenges and facing adversity. Your willingness to listen, provide constructive feedback, and overall guidance has been instrumental in not only my personal growth but the growth of all leaders and staff. Your leadership style and empathy, integrity and genuine concern for the organization has created a positive culture that motivates and empowers everyone. You’ve left a lasting imprint on the organization and the leaders, and staff are fortunate to have been able to work alongside you.

Lauren

Dear Harvey –

On behalf of ASHG, thank you for all your help these last six months. Your expertise, collegiality, approachability and warmth were an unbeatable combo! You really helped me and the entire team make big strides and we thank you! On a personal note, I really appreciated the occasional “ear” you offered and good counsel you always provided. I know another organization will be very lucky to have your talents on the team and I hope we stay in touch! He’s been a delight to work with and he is helping to bridge our gaps, address acute change issues, and being an experienced, collegial guide. - Luke Mortensen, VP Medical Education, American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, Chevy Chase, MD

Harvey, it was great to have you here as Interim Executive Director, even if it was only for a short time. A year ago right now, I can tell you that what is happening today seemed not only impossible, but crazy. It’s amazing to think that such change has come about so quickly in an organization where it used to move at a glacial pace, when it happened at all. We won’t be out of the woods for a while, but it’s reassuring to know that the budget work and financial plans you established are in place and we are headed in the right direction. Thank you for your candor and honesty – they were a refreshing prelude to the changes I believe are going to continue. It was a pleasure working with you and I hope you’ll stay in touch.

All the best

- Diane Shinn Senior Director of Communications and Public Relations, Council for Exceptional Children, Arlington, VA

Professor Tillipman, I have learned so much from your class and I tell all my classmates how valuable the experience has been. You brought things to my attention that I have never considered before, but my favorite tip is to check the financials of any organization before I accept a position. The confidence I have gained in finance has inspired me to learn more, and I love the Kahn Academy site that you showed us as well. Thanks for all that you have done this semester and don't be surprised if you hear from me in the future. Thanks again,

- Karen Nalley, MSW graduate student, University of Maryland School of Social Work, Baltimore, MD

Professor Tillipman: Your class was awesome!!!! The most interesting class in my 3 year experience in the school of social work. It was a very good opportunity to meet a great social worker/MBA working in the field. You inspired me a lot. Thank you so much for the lectures and sharing your field experience.

- Sang Won Park, Program Director, Washington Youth Foundation, Rockville, Maryland MSW graduate student, University of Maryland School of Social Work, Baltimore, MD

I am writing this letter of recommendation on behalf of Mr. Harvey Tillipman, who has served as the Interim Executive Director of AMDA for the past year. Mr. Tillipman began his work at AMDA in January of 2012 following the departure of a long tenured executive director. These types of transitions can be a stressful time for an organization, its employees and board members, most of whom are not local. Mr. Tillipman brought both competence and a calm demeanor to the job and was a true stabilizing force for the organization during 2012. As board president, I interacted with Mr. Tillipman on an almost weekly basis. He was able to evaluate a complex organization and use his time effectively. He was a good listener and then was able to focus on the priorities at hand without getting lost in too much detail. His two greatest strengths were in managing the budget and providing leadership and direction to the staff. He also was of significant assistance to the organization in its search for a full time executive director. While AMDA is excited to begin a new chapter in its history, the board and staff will miss Mr. Tillipman. It was a challenging year for me personally as board president, and I could not have succeeded in my role without the help and assistance of Mr. Tillipman. I would not hesitate to recommend him for another interim executive director position.

- Matthew S. Wayne, MD, CMD President of the Board of Directors, American Medical Directors

Association, Columbia, Maryland

Harvey, it was great working with you at AMDA. You have clearly mastered how to handle what would

appear be a tough gig every time you walk in a new door.

- Keith Haglund Managing Editor, Caring for the Ages, Elsevier Publisher, Maryland

On a personal note, I just want to thank you for all you've done for AMDA and for me. You've given

members and staff hope and optimism and reminded us what a great organization this is and that

we have a bright future. You also helped me recapture my joy for work, and I am eternally grateful for

that. I've learned so much from you about work, health care, business, and life. Thank you.

I worked closely with Harvey Tillipman while he was Interim Executive Director for CrisisLink, a leading regional crisis intervention and suicide prevention hotline based in Arlington,VA. Harvey came into the organization as it was going through some difficult changes including having lost a sole-source contract with the state of Va. This required staff reduction as well as staff reconfiguration. Harvey adeptly managed this new group of individuals while hiring a key replacement staffer. The organization required someone with expert budgeting skills to take charge of tracking and reducing expenses which Harvey accomplished. He is a pleasure to work with and received compliments in the funding community and from board members and staff. It was comforting to know that if he was to represent the organization in the community everyone would be impressed and appreciative.Harvey gave the board two important organizational analyses that were spot-on in breadth and focus on the challenges CrisisLink is facing today as well as how to solve situations for a better future. One was delivered within 60 days of his tenure and one at the end of his assignment 6 months later. These were then turned over to the new permanent Executive Director for her to assess and determine priorities. Harvey was helpful during this hand-off of Director responsibilities and during the transition period.I would without hesitation recommend Harvey for any organization looking for an Interim Executive Director. He will bring steadiness, management skills and his budgeting acumen to the role.

I worked alongside Harvey in his role as President/CEO of AJAS. Importantly, I was a member of the search committee that recruited and hired Harvey. Thus, my perspective of Harvey's performance and ability covers not months but years. During the course of Harvey's tenure, he continually evolved the organization's mission and vision alongside lay leadership. This partnership process resulted in significant growth and success for AJAS. However, when Harvey was hired, AJAS was for all practical purposes a dormant Association. Its financial status was marginal and membership had lost touch with the Association. Other than an annual meeting with modest attendance, there was no other program or service being offered at the time of Harvey's employment. In a nutshell, Harvey stepped up to the challenge and completely turned around the AssociationTime and space does not permit an inventory of his accomplishments but suffice it to say that through Harvey's leadership AJAS became more than financially stable, membership increased to an all time high, annual meeting attendance was never been better and new programs and services were in place for the customer (membership). Previous to Harvey's tenure, the Association was not invited to participate in national coalitions or meetings within the industry on any regular basis. Harvey applied his organizational and management skills in such a way that AJAS now sits at the table with other national organizations addressing issues of common concern. Bringing together a unique combination of professional business acumen and personal relationship building, Harvey successfully managed the Association's business while creating a welcoming customer service orientation. He successfully hired and retained staff which resulted in a strong leadership team for the organization. This teamwork and continuity of leadership from the membership standpoint was invaluable.

___________________________

I served on the Board of the Association of Jewish Aging Services (AJAS) for a number of years. I also served AJAS as a member of our Strategic Planning Task Team, Annual Meeting Program Committee, and the Editorial Review Committee of the Journal of Jewish Aging. In these various capacities, I worked with Harvey Tillipman. Throughout all of the experiences I developed a high level of respect and appreciation for Mr. Tillipman. Harvey performed at a high level in leading AJAS at a time of varied challenges. I give Harvey much credit for the "turn around" of AJAS. Our organization is now fiscally sound and enjoys a much improved public reputation. He deserves credit for the development of our strategic plan, a generous cash surplus, the initiation of the Journal of Jewish Aging and other key publications, and highly successful Annual Meetings. On a personal level, Harvey has a flexible management style that has allowed him to be successful with very diverse and at times challenging members. He is equally comfortable in working with a CEO from a small to a much larger organization. Harvey has always been responsive and respectful.
